2 Background Flightless birds have more feathers than other birds. Flightless birds have smaller bones in their wings. (wings are too small for their bodies) These birds have to rely heavily on swimming or running. Some have claws on their feet to protect them from predators.

3 Why don’t they fly? It is believed that flightless birds evolve from birds that can fly and they evolved because of lack of predators. This is not the case for all flightless birds though. Emu

5 The smallest flightless bird is the Inaccessible Island Rail that weighs 32.7 grams and has a length of 12.5 cm. The largest flightless bird is the Ostrich which weighs 156 kg and who’s length is 2.7 meters.

6 Flightless birds in captivity are the easiest to take care of because they do not have to be caged. Ostriches were farms for their decorative feathers, today they are used for their meat and to make leather. Information found at::http://www.answers.com/topic/flightless-bird-1
