Non-Canonical Gospels The Gospel of Peter & The Gospel of Mary

The Gospel of Peter

Background: Who: Simon Peter (the apostle) When: 70-160 AD

Outline of The Gospel of Peter -Jesus is crucified -Passion and resurrection narrative -Pilate withdraws from the trial -Similar to Mark and John

Canonization:Why it is Not in the Canon ● It shows no knowledge of the special material distinctive to the four gospels ● The absence of quotation formulas used to introduce scripture citation ● The Gospel of Peter is considered independent of the four gospels, however, it is analogous to Mark and John. ● Said to have been written by heretics, not Peter, to further their claims of Docetism (“the doctrine according to which the phenomenon of Christ, his historical and bodily existence, and thus above all the human form of Jesus, was altogether mere semblance without any true reality.") ● Describes Jesus as a gnostic

The Gospel of Mary

Who: Mary Magdalene Anonymous-Gnostic author When: 120-180 AD Background:

-The Savior leaves -The disciples wonder about preaching to the Gentiles -Mary describes her vision -Peter, Andrew, and Levi argue about the validity of her vision and Mary’s role as a woman Outline of Mary:

Canonization: Why It Is Not in the Canon ● Written 2nd century rather than 1st ● Many pages are missing, creating an incomplete account ● Claims that the teachings in the book are heretical o Supposedly written by a Gnostic ● No consistency with New Testament teachings o Suggests that Mary was given preeminence over all disciples which is inconsistent with other the gospels o Teaches that this world we be destroyed whereas the gospels teach that it will be redeemed
