Subordinate Adverbial Clauses

Subordinate Clauses  A clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb.  A subordinate clause cannot stand alone as a complete thought.

Adverbs  Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.  Adverbs answer the questions: how? when? where? why?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXwE1dVDHP0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXwE1dVDHP0

Examples of adverbs answering the when question  I walked today. The adverbial clause below is acting as one part of speech.  I walked before the sun went down.

Adverbial clauses are introduced by subordinating conjunctions  My mom smiled when I made dinner.

Remember adverbial clauses can’t stand alone!  Here are some examples of adverbial clauses.  until I fall asleep  whenever my teacher yells  after I walk the dog All of these groups of words are clauses (they each have a subject and a verb), but none express a complete thought. Let’s attach an independent clause before or after the adverb clause to make a complete sentence.  I listen to music until I fall asleep.  Whenever my teacher yells, I know that she is frustrated.  I will take out the trash after I walk the dog.
