2001.10.20 JPS/DNPY. Akiba The PHENIX Collaboration

2001.10.20 JPS/DNPY. Akiba Motivation Lepton and lepton pairs are “clean” probes of early stage of heavy ion collision –J/  production  Deconfinement –Thermal lepton pair  Direct radiation from QGP – , ,  in dense matter  Chiral symmetry restoration –Etc. High pt single electron (p t > 1 GeV/c) –Heavy quark semi-leptonic decays (c  eX, b  eX) have significant contributions to high pt electrons.  Heavy quark production can be studied by single electron spectrum –From heavy quark production, one can study Initial gluon density in high energy heavy ion collision Thermal production of heavy quarks in very high temperature Energy loss of heavy quarks traversing the dense matter Base line for J/  suppression

2001.10.20 JPS/DNPY. Akiba Prompt electrons at high pt At ISR(s NN ½ ~60GeV), “prompt” electron signal is observed at e/  ~ 2x10 -4. –The most likely source of the electrons is charm semi-leptonic decay At RHIC (s NN ½ ~200GeV), the electron signal from charm is expected at e/  ~ 3-4 x10 -4 in p+p The e/  ratio can be as high as 10 -3 in Au+Au collision –Production of charm quark is expected to scale with binary collisions. –Production of the high pt pions is suppressed relative to binary scaling by about factor 3  e from   Dalitz e from c decay e from b decay (Simulation)

2001.10.20 JPS/DNPY. Akiba PHENIX detector in RUN-1 Data is run RHIC run-1, Au+Au at s NN 1/2 = 130 GeV Detectors for the electron measurement –BBC Trigger vertex position –DC and PC1 (W) tracking –RICH(W) electron ID –PBSC(W): electron ID Energy measurement

2001.10.20 JPS/DNPY. Akiba 0.8GeV<p<0.9GeV Electron Identification Electrons are identified by RICH and EMCAL A clear peak in energy/momentum (E/p) ratio is seen at 1.0 after RICH hit is required EMCAL E/p cut cleans up the rest of the background. Random background is also subtracted by an event mixing method All charged With RICH hit Random background E/p ratio

2001.10.20 JPS/DNPY. Akiba Electron Spectra Electron spectrum is measured up to 4 GeV/c. Systematic uncertainties: ~10% (not shown) The electron spectra include “trivial” background from  0 Dalitz decay and photon conversion. The amount of the background from light hadron decays is estimated by a cocktail calculation that is constrained by the pion spectra measured by PHENIX

2001.10.20 JPS/DNPY. Akiba Spectra in central and peripheral collisoins

2001.10.20 JPS/DNPY. Akiba Systematic uncertainties Figure 17 Estimated relative systematic uncertainties of inclusive electron yield. The total systematic uncertainty is shown as black line as function of pt. The other lines are break-down of the contributions: red (MC statistics) green (geometrical acceptance) blue (track EMCAL association cut) magenta (embedding statistics) light blue (embedding systematic), thick red (n0 cut) thick green (chi2 cut) thick blue (E/p matching) and thick magenta (hadron background ) Contributions from electron ID efficiency, acceptance, tracking efficiency, hadron background, etc.

2001.10.20 JPS/DNPY. Akiba Background from light hadron decays The measured electron spectra includes trivial background from light hadron decays such as  0 Dalitz decay and photon conversions. The background is estimated from a cocktail calculation that is constrained by pion measurement by PHENIX  0  e + e -   0   e+e-e+e- ~80% of background Proportional to pion conversion ~ 1.9 x Dalitz in PHENIX   e + e -     e+e-e+e- ~20% of  0 contribution at high pt Other contributions: small

2001.10.20 JPS/DNPY. Akiba Electron yield relative to expected background For central collision, the data shows excess over light hadron cocktail The data is in better agreement with a cocktail that includes charm contribution The details of the cocktail calculation will be shown by TH9: Ralf Averbeck.

2001.10.20 JPS/DNPY. Akiba Summary and Outlook Inclusive electron spectra from Au+Au collisions at s NN 1/2 = 130 GeV is measured by PHENIX The data shows excess over expected light hadron contribution in central collision The data is in better agreement with a cocktail calculation that includes charm contribution –Other interpretation can not be excluded by this data alone. We are collecting a much higher statistics data set at s NN 1/2 = 200 GeV with a much improved detector. More single electron results will come soon from the new data.
