2 Tom is an eleven-year-old boy who lives in Siggiewi. He likes to play football. He also enjoys playing video games on his play station. His favourite subjects are Maths and English. He has a brother who is fifteen years old. Tom doesn’t get on very well with his brother.

3 The uses of the Present Simple 1.The present simple is used to talk about general facts about our lives. Examples: a)I am eleven years old. b)I like to eat pizza. c)I play football with our school team.

4 Mark wakes up every day at half past six. He takes a shower, puts on his uniform and goes downstairs. He eats his breakfast. He likes to eat cereal with milk for breakfast. At quarter past seven he leaves for school. He catches the half past seven bus and arrives at school at quarter to eight. At eight o’clock the bell rings and all the students gather for the morning assembly.

5 2.The present simple is also used to talk about routines; things that you do regularly. Examples: a)I wake up every day at half past seven. b)Every Monday I play football with my friends. c)On Friday evening I visit my grandparents. d)Every Tuesday evening I watch my favourite programme on TV.

8 Positive Sentences 1.The boy does his homework in the evening. 2.The children like to eat ice-cream. 3.You wake up early during the week.

9 Negative Sentences The boy doesn’t do his homework in the evening. The children don’t like to eat ice-cream. You don’t wake up early during the week.

10 Questions and Short Answers Does the boy do his homework in the evening? Yes, he does. No, he doesn’t. Do the children like to eat ice-cream? Yes, they do. No, they don’t. Do you wake up early during the week? Yes, I do. No, I don’t

11 RULES 1.To make questions and negatives in the present simple we use the verb DO/DOES. 2. We add an –s to the third person singular (he/she/it).

12 3.However with verbs that end in –o, -sh, -ch and –s (with he/she/it) we add –es. (Example does, finishes, catches, tosses). 4.With verbs that end with –y we add –ies (with he/she/is). Example: study – studies BUT play – plays.
