Bell Ringer Objectives SWBAT - Discuss the location of points and ordered pairs of given points 5 minutes 4 minutes 3 minutes 2 minutes 1 minute 30 seconds TIMES UP!!! Homework: Complete “He’s the King” worksheet
3
1. What is the difference between quadrant I and II? 2. What is the difference between quadrant IV and III Objectives SWBAT: Locate points in all four quadrants Homework: Complete “He’s the King” worksheet
4
II (-, +) I (+, +) IV (+, -) III (-, -) Quadrants Objectives SWBAT: Draw the coordinate plan and label all important aspects Homework: Complete “He’s the King” worksheet
5
Breakthrough!!! Take a 2 nd number line, standing it on its end, and cross the 1 st number line at zero Objectives SWBAT: Locate points in all four quadrants Homework: Complete “He’s the King” worksheet
6
Number lines drawn like this are called “axes” (pronounced “ACK-seez”) – more than ONE axis The horizontal number line x- axis: y- axis: The vertical number line Objectives SWBAT: Locate points in all four quadrants
7
Two number lines, or axes, one vertical & one horizontal, that intersect at their zero points, the origin. origin (0,0) A pair of numbers that correspond to the point where the two axes (number lines) cross each other Origin Objectives SWBAT: Locate points in all four quadrants
8
5 5 -5 y-coordinate: The first value in a coordinate pair. Indicates position on the x-axis The 2 nd value in a coordinate pair. Indicates position on the y-axis x-coordinate: Ordered Pair Used to locate points on a coordinate plane Objectives SWBAT: Locate points in all four quadrants
9
5 5 -5 In an ordered pair, the first number is the x-coordinate and the 2 nd number is the y- coordinate Ordered Pair y-coordinate: x-coordinate: Objectives SWBAT: Locate points in all four quadrants

Graphing Points Objectives SWBAT: Draw the coordinate plan and label all important aspects To draw a dot at a point on the coordinate plane that corresponds to an ordered pair. Also called: “Plotting a point” Graph an Ordered Pair Steps to Graphing Ordered Pairs Step 1: Start at the origin Step 2: -If the x-coordinate is positive, move right the number of units indicated. -If the x-coordinate is negative, move left the number of units indicated Step 3: -If the y-coordinate is positive, move up the number of units indicated. -If the y-coordinate is negative, move down the number of units indicated Step 4: Draw a dot Step 5. Label the dot with the coordinate or letter given.
14
5 5 -5 R(-4,1) S(0, -3) T(3, -2) Plot each point on a coordinate plane Plotting “R” 1.Move left 4 units since the x- coordinate is -4 2.Move up 1 unit since the y- coordinate is 1 3.Draw a dot and label it R Objectives SWBAT: Locate points in all four quadrants
15
5 5 -5 A(3, 5) B(0, -3) C(3, -2) D(0, -1) E(-2, 5) F(-3, -4) Plot each point on a coordinate plane Objectives SWBAT: Locate points in all four quadrants
16
DO NOW: 1. Label the Axes 2. Label each quadrant 3. Plot the following points ( 0,0) (1, 2) ( 2, 1) (5, 3) (2, 5) (-4, 3) (3, -4) (-1, -3) (-3, -1) Homework: Complete “He’s the King” worksheet
17
Review Problems Objectives SWBAT - Discuss the location of points and ordered pairs of given points Homework: Complete “He’s the King” worksheet
18
Reflection: Objectives SWBAT - Discuss the location of points and ordered pairs of given points Based on your knowledge of graphing and what we have done in class so far explain, in AT LEAST 4 complete sentences how, graphing can be used to in everyday life.
