Mrs. MacWilliams CSI Forensic Science
2
How to Use Calipers- Inside
3
Ancestry Determination- Skull
Measure nasal width Measure nasal height Nasal width ÷ nasal height = nasal index Nasal index Caucasion = <.48 Mongoloid (Asian) = Negroid (African) = > .53
4
Nasal Index Measuring USING THE “INSIDE” MEASUREMENT, MEASURE FROM THE INSIDE OF NASAL SPINE TO INSIDE OF THE SUTURE LINE OF NASAL BONES.
5
Measure for nasal index
Caucasoid- Figure 22 Mongoloid- Figure 23 Negroid- Figure 24 **OBTAIN LAMINATED SHEETS FOR FIGURES FROM MRS. MACWILLIAMS Use a ruler to measure nasal width and divide by nasal height to get nasal index of each. Write in calculations under the Table 5 for each ancestry.
6
Nasal Spine Caucasion = prominent Mongoloid = somewhat prominent
Negroid= very small
7
Nasal Silling/Guttering
Feel the base of the nasal cavity on either side of the nasal spine Caucasion = sharp (silling) Mongloid = rounded Negroid = no ridge (guttering)
8
Prognathism Prognathic = jaw sticks out and away from face (use pencil from nasal spine to chin to determine) Caucasian = straight Mongoloid = variable Negroid = Prognathic
10
Shape of Orbital Openings
Negroid Caucasian Mongoloid -Rectangular Rounded Rounded Somewhat Somewhat square circular
11
A Caucasian B Negroid C Mongoloid
12
PICTURES Measure the 3 pictures of the caucasoid, mongoloid, and negroid skull to determine nasal index of each as a comparison for yours.
13
Femur SKELETONS 1&2 ONLY Lay femur on table so lesser trochanter is closest to table. Place palm of hand flat on table and slide fingers under the curvature of shaft. Caucasian = hand fits under Negroid = Hand does not fit under
