2 ARISTOTLE In Rhetoric, Aristotle describes three main types of rhetoric: ethos, logos, and pathos. Rhetoric (n) - the art of speaking or writing effectively.

4 ETHOS Ethos = speaker’s credibility A credible speaker is: Respectable (trustworthy, moral, of good character) Relatable to the audience An authority on his or her topic

6 LOGOS Logos = logical argument A logical argument: Is based on facts and statistics Makes sense

7 LOGOS (CONT’D) Claim: Students should be allowed to chew gum in class. What are facts you could use to convince an audience to believe the above claim?

8 PATHOS Pathos = emotional connection Language choice can add to an argument. Narratives can help an audience connect emotionally to an argument.
