REASONS FOR THE SINO-SOVIET SPLIT Mao disliked Stalin’s personality and the way Chinese were treated when they went to the USSR Mao didn't feel he was treated well on his first visit to USSR It is suspected, Mao and Stalin did not get along therefore Stalin didn’t want to spend time which he didn't need to with him. Khrushchev and Mao did not get along either Khrushchev's de-Stalinization’s cult of personality was a reflection on Mao’s cult of personality The Sino-Soviet treaty of 1950 was in favor of Stalin The $300 million from the USSR was a loan (with interest), NOT a gift

REASONS FOR THE SINO-SOVIET SPLIT Mao’s second visit to the USSR An attempt by Krushchev to make peace between USSR and China Mao made it clear that the USSR’s approach to the west was too accommodating The Taiwan issue (1958): Without consulting the USSR he prepared a full scale assault on the nationalist held island. (the attack did not follow through because the USA prepared for war against China) The USSR did not support China in its threats to attack Taiwan, this caused Khrushchev to withdraw economic advisors from China Rivalry over Albania: China gave support to countries in the Eastern-bloc when USSR was undergoing de-Stalinazation.
