Walter Sondheim 6/9/20081 DOE – Review of VTX upgrade detector for PHENIX Mechanics: Walter Sondheim - LANL

Walter Sondheim 6/9/20082 Outline: Mechanical design of VTX detector –Major mechanical elements and analysis required HYTEC status with global design model Status of pixel ladders Detail design developed – tubeless stave Carbon composite fabrication, vendor selection Where are we now -

Walter Sondheim 6/9/20083 Mechanical Design of VTX: Pole tip of central magnet Nose-cone calorimeter VTX detector Beryllium beam pipe VTX volume: 80.0cm in Z, R for barrel 25.cm, R for read-out cards at each end 50. cm

Walter Sondheim 6/9/20084 HYTEC status of global design model: VTX barrel detector: 2 layers of pixels 2 layers of strip- pixel detectors Forward Vertex Detector FVTX Read-out card region for both VTX and FVTX, 5 layers of cards; 3 layers for pixels, 1 layer for strip- pixel, 1 layer for FVTX. Same for each end. Orange indicates gas seal.

Walter Sondheim 6/9/20085 HYTEC status of global design model: Breakout of major mechanical components: –Staves* Pixels – inner two layers Strip-Pixels – outer two layers –Barrel Mounts for four layers* –Space Frame* –Big Wheel Regions – read-out electronic cards –Gas Enclosure –Isolation Mounts* –Assembly Fixtures –Cooling System Requirements *Those elements that require mechanical and or thermal analysis

Walter Sondheim 6/9/20086 Overview of composite pieces: Isolation mount Pixel layer 1 barrel mount Pixel layer 2 barrel mount Layer 3 barrel mount Layer 4 barrel mount Space frame outer shell Space frame center gusset

Walter Sondheim 6/9/20087 Barrel Mount Bracings Bracings (baseline HC core sandwich panels) are added to improve the stiffness First mode increases by 55% to 38Hz Barrel Mount Bracings

Walter Sondheim 6/9/20088 VTX Deformation Summary Staves deformation summary with barrel mount bracings installed -Staves Max deflection is reduced by 4% -deformation summary with barrel mount bracings and FVTX installed

Walter Sondheim 6/9/20089 HYTEC status of pixel ladders: Layer 1; 5 ladders Layer 2: 10 ladders Pixel read-out card, 30W per. Cards mounted to Alum plate with cooling.

Walter Sondheim 6/9/200810 Pixel stave thermal test set up: Test stave configuration –Cooling tube created by thermal plane - M55J composite and omega piece only –No pixel sensors Strip heaters used to apply thermal load –Thermocouples bonded on top of strip heaters Coolant –3M NOVEC-HFE 7000 (1-methoxyheptafluoropropane) Density – 1400 kg/m^3, Radiation Length – 25.2 cm, Specific Heat – 1300 J/kg/C Measured Fluid temp rise 1.3 C, calculated.58 C Energy gain by cooling fluid; measured 43W, calculated 19.5W OUTLET INLET T1 T3 T2 Strip Heaters Thermocouples Thermal Plane Hose Barb Omega Piece Cutaway View of Thermal Test Stave

Walter Sondheim 6/9/200811 HYTEC pixel stave assembly: M55J composite pieces Molded PEEK hose barb PEEK mounting blocks, each with a precision hole for pin location and mounting hole Ground pig-tail for composite material Assembly glued together, room temperature epoxy

Walter Sondheim 6/9/200812 HYTEC pixel stave prototype: One of five pixel stave prototypes, with rapid prototype plastic fittings designed to fit contour at end of omega piece and have the correct angle barb to adapt to coolant tube. Detail of one end.

Walter Sondheim 6/9/200813 Pixel ladder barrel mounts: Composite skin honeycomb core structure with PEEK blocks attached to mount ladders. Ladder two barrel mount attaches to backside off PEEK attachment blocks

Walter Sondheim 6/9/200814 Pixel ladder barrel mounts: Mounting blocks on layer 2 barrel mount to layer 1 barrel mount Mounting blocks are PEEK material

Walter Sondheim 6/9/200815 Composite fabrication: We have investigated many vendors to fabricate composite components for the VTX assembly such as aerospace companies. Composite material is in big demand, most material manufacturers require a minimum order. Composite material needs to be kept frozen to extend its shelf life. Investigated working with another National Laboratory that has developed the technical expertise to fabricate precision composite structures for unique detector applications. Conclusion; develop a working relationship with the Composite shop at LBNL run by Eric Anderssen. –Potential costs savings, closer working relationship. –Developed composite support structure for ATLAS pixel detector.

Walter Sondheim 6/9/200816 Where are we now: 95% Complete Global CAD model for VTX and FVTX Detailed drawing package percentage complete – –Pixel ladder stave (95%) –Pixel ladder barrel mount (90%) –Pixel ladder cables, read-out cards (95%) –Space frame (90%) –Interface with external structural support (90%) Model and testing complete – –Pixel ladder (95%) –Overall assembly (mechanical and thermal model) (90%) Developed assembly procedure for VTX barrel, (see R. Pak’s talk)
