Welcome to Kindergarten, Parents! Take a moment to go on a “scavenger hunt” of the portraits hanging outside our classroom. Your children have drawn a picture of themselves with some clues… can you guess which number they are? Do you need one more clue? Look in your child’s Journal Writing Folder!

Guided Reading *Students are guided in flexible groups to practice skills and strategies introduced in shared reading *Instruction is based on students’ needs. *Students are at independent literacy centers during Guided Reading times

Independent Reading *Students independently apply/practice skills/strategies addressed *Teacher conferences with students to assess needs and interests, set a goal and plan for future lessons

Read Aloud *Teacher reads rich literature to students from a variety of genres. *Teacher models fluent reading and how to interact with a text (“think-aloud”).

Word Study *Teacher models how words work and the principles of phonics Example: – Students will learn about how to separate the sounds in each word – FAN: “F-A-N”

Writing *Students practice writing different genres using the writing process including sharing and discussing their work with peers. *Students use phonemic awareness to represent “soundz in wordz.” SPELLING *Teacher conferences with students to assess needs, interests and to plan for future lessons.
