Essential Questions 1. How have international conflicts affected the balance of power in Europe throughout the modern era? 2. How has nationalism been both a unifying and dividing force throughout European history? 3. A definition of “Western civilization” includes a progression towards democracy and the advocacy of political liberty. To what extent is this an accurate characterization of Europe in modern history?

Essential Questions 4. How have the arts reflected the political, economic, religious, and social changes in European history? 5. What role has philosophy – founded in Europe (ancient Greece) – played in the formation of modern Europe? 6. How has religion played a role in the formation of the modern European state? 7. How has geography (and geographic changes) affected the development of various European societies? How has geography changed as a product of political, economic, and social factors?
