1 Tackling the SATS Reading Paper By the end of today’s sessions, you should know: the types of questions you must prepare for how to answer the questions How to pace yourself and manage your time wisely

2 Do you know…? How many passages are in the Reading Booklet? How much time you have to read each passage? How much time you have to answer the questions? How many sections are in the Answer Booklet? How much time you have for each section in the answer booklet?

3 15 Minutes Reading Time You have FIVE minutes for each passage Number your passages Annotate: circle, underline, highlight any key words that will help you to remember what you have read.

4 20 minutes to answer Give yourself 10 minutes for the shorter questions and 10 minutes for the longer one which is usually worth 5 marks. When 20 minutes is up, finish the sentence that you are writing and then MOVE ON! If you are not sure of the answer, move on and come back to that question later. Attempt EVERY question: you won’t lose marks for incorrect answers and your guess just may be right.

5 The Eden Project Task You have FIVE minutes to read this passage and then you will have some questions to answer. On your marks….get set…..GO!!!!!!

6 Want Another Go at Speed-Reading? Task You have FIVE minutes to read the passage entitled: “The Man Who Loved Insects” and then you will have some questions to answer. On your marks….get set….. GO!!!!!!

7 What Types of Questions Should You Prepare For? 1.Do you know the C.A.P. of the passage? 2.Do you know HOW the writer: a) creates an impression…mood….atmosphere…? b) makes the reader feel…think…? c) uses language to….?

8 C.A.P. Content: what the passage is about? Audience: who it is written for? Purpose: why it has been written?

9 HOW the writer….? How…? devices methods ways techniques tools

10 The writer’s ways, methods, tools, techniques, devices LANGUAGE *Similes/Metaphors/Comparisons *Imperatives *Superlatives *Hyperbole *Personification *Rule of three *Rhetorical Question *Adjectives/adjectival phrases PRESENTATION *Images *Bullet points/numbering *Varied sentence/paragraph lengths *Varied font style and size *Formatting *Text boxes *Headings/Sub-headings

11 Practice Time!!! 1. Pacing yourself: You have 45 minutes to answer the long question for THREE passages in your pack. Work out your reading and answering time 2. Go it? The time is now … you have 45 minutes, you may start!

13 How does the writer suggest that Jan Swammerdam is a person to be admired? What is this question asking you to do? Can you re-phrase it in your own words? What are some of the things that you will include in your answer?

14 How is the reader prepared for the discovery that the treasure has gone? What is this question asking you to do? Can you re-phrase it in your own words? What are some of the things that you will include in your answer?

15 Next Session After lunch, you will sit a timed practice paper so be back here by 12.55pm for a 1pm start. I will escort you downstairs and let you out. You are not allowed back inside the building until 12.50pm. Doors will close at 1pm and there won’t be anyone to let you in thereafter. DO NOT BE LATE!
