How to Plant Tulips Back Select tulip varieties and types by flower color. Purchase high-quality bulbs, free of bruises or soft spots. Chill the bulbs, if necessary (some come prechilled), by placing them in a paper bag and keeping them in the refrigerator for six to eight weeks. Select a sunny planting location. Prepare the soil, if necessary, by incorporating ample organic matter. Dig holes 2 1/2 to 3 times as deep as the bulb is wide, usually about 4 to 6 inches deep. Add bulb fertilizer to the bottom of the hole. Place the tulip bulb in the hole, pointed side up, root side down. Water the bulbs thoroughly.
