Bellringer – 10/30 Title: Religion vs Nature Does God cause natural phenomena or does nature?

Bellringer – 10/31 Title: Halloween Fact What document that caused a major turning point in European History was posted on this date October 31 st, 1517 in Wittenberg, Germany?

Scientific Revolution Chart: Gather a ruler, colored pencils and a piece of computer paper from off of the cart. Outline a chart that looks similar to the one below: Scientist/Mathmet ician Major Accomplishment Ptolemy Copernicus Galileo Issac Newton Robert Boyle Margaret Cavendish Maria Winkelmann Francis Bacon

The Scientific Revolution Chapter 17 – Section 1

New technology required more science and spot-on calculations. Problems like finding out how much a ship could carry required mathematics. People like Nicholas Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, Galileo, and Isaac Newton were great mathematicians. They challenged the old ideas of Aristotle and Greek philosophers. They thought that the secrets of nature were disguised in math.

Ptolemy Ptolemy who lived around the year 1000, was a great astronomer. During the Middle Ages, the Ptolemaic system of the universe was developed. This shown that all planets revolved around the Earth= geocentric.

Copernicus Copernicus, a modern mathematician, felt like Ptolemy was wrong. He said that the universe was heliocentric, or sun-centered. He really figured out that the Earth moves on its axis and revolves around the Sun.

Kepler Johannes Kepler was also a mathematician. He proved that the Sun was in the center, and added that the orbits were not circular as Copernicus thought, but elliptical. This is called Kepler's First Law.

He found four moons around Jupiter, and mountains on our moon! Galileo Galileo became the most famous mathematician, he attracted the attention of the Catholic Church. He published his findings in 1610, which spread like wildfire because of the printing press. He said that the Earth was not the center, and that other planets were made of the same stuff.

Isaac Newton wrote a book called Principia. He found out that planets do not go off in a straight line because of the universal law of gravitation. Every object is attracted to every other object by gravity. He put all the ideas together to create a modern picture of the solar system. He also created physics and calculus. Thanks.

Make this chart and turn in for class grade. Who were the four modern mathematicians and what contributions did they make to the Scientific Revolution?

Bellringer 8/27: Write the question and all possible answers. Please circle the correct answer. Who was the mathematician who found that the Earth and all planets revolve on elliptical orbits? A. Copernicus B. Kepler C. Galileo D. Newton

Breakthroughs in Medicine and Chemistry p age 515 Galen, a Greek doctor, lived in the year 200. His understanding of the human body relied on animal dissection. He was wrong about a lot of things. New science was starting to be practiced in the 16th century.

Andreas Vesalius: w rote a book in 1543 about his findings when he studied human bodies as a surgeon. Although he made several new discoveries, he still thought two kinds of blood flowed through the veins and arteries.

William Harvey: p ublished a book called On the Motion of the Heart and Blood, in 1628. He proved the heart was the pump, that there was one kind of blood, and that it flowed in a circuit through the body.

Robert Boyle: H e was one of the first scientists to conduct controlled experiments. He discovered chemical properties of gases, which led to Boyle's Law. This states that the volume of gas varies with the pressure put on it.

Women and the Origins of Science M argaret Cavendish: She wrote several books, and was critical that humans could become masters of nature through science. Many other women were astronomers, trained by their husbands or fathers at home. University was not a place for women. The most famous is Maria Winkelmann. She discovered a comet. She wanted to go to school, but was not allowed.

Bellringer 8/28 Please write the full question and all answer choice. Circle the best one. The ancient philosopher who used animal dissection to get a picture of the human body was: A. Galileo B. Ptolemy C. William Harvey D. Galen

Descartes and Reason page 516. H e wrote about the doubt everyone had during the times. He said, "I think, therefore I am." He put importance on his own mind, and said that the body and mind are two separate things. He is called the Father of Rationalism, which is the belief that reason is the source of knowledge.

Scientific Method: Francis Bacon A n English philosopher and not a scientist. However, he felt that scientists should make careful observations to test theories (hypotheses) He wanted science to benefit industry, farming and trade.

GRAB BAG Activity: You and your desk partner will work to add facts to a name or concept. You will have one name. Say a fact to your neighbor, then they will say one to you. Let's see how many you can get. Write it down. You have seven minutes. I will call on you and you will share your facts with the class. Let's see if the class can guess yours.

Bellringer 8/28: Write the question and all answer choices. Which nation was the first to engage in the slave trade? A. England B. Spain C. Portugal D. Germany E. Poland

Bellringer 8/29: Who championed religious tolerance and practiced Deism? A. Voltaire B. John Locke C. Montesquieu D. William Harvey

http://youtu.be/joVkx20oVIg Step 1: I will assign stations. Step 2: Go to station and read the question. Step 3: Talk about what you think. There is not right or wrong answer. Talk it up. Step 4: When the timer goes off, switch to next station. Step 5: After we visit all stations, please have a seat and wait for instruction.

Bellringer 8/30: Margaret Cavendish was a woman who believed that: A. Men were naturally smarter than women B. Humans could not master nature C. Astronomers were wrong about the Earth D. Girls should stay in the house

Religion during the Enlightenment M any books, including the Bible were easy to buy and this helped people learn how to read. John Wesley, who founded the Methodist Church, taught about Jesus in open fields. He wanted to preach to the poor. Even with all the science going on at the time, people needed spiritual healing and practiced good works.

The Arts "pleasure, happiness, and love" Rococo style

MUSIC!!!! Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart Bach was a German organist who composed (wrote) Mass in B minor Handel was also a German who wrote the religious music called Messiah Haydn wrote the music The Creation and The Seasons Mozart was a child prodigy (he was real young and really good) He wrote famous operas including The Marriage of Figaro

What are Enlightened Rulers? All of these ideas started to affect society. The people wanted more freedom. The rulers should allow religious toleration, freedom of speech and the press, and rights of private property. They should also support the arts, sciences, and a good education for all people.

Maria Theresa of Austria Frederick the Great of Prussia Catherine the Great of Russia

Maria Theresa Frederick the Great Catherine the Great Write the reforms each ruler made during their rule in the appropriate column. Raise your hand for assistance. page 529
