3. Hebrews The Hebrews, also known as Israelites, were a group of people who practiced Judaism and lived in the region that is now Israel. The Hebrews identified themselves as descendants of Abraham, the founder of Judaism. They practiced monotheism, which means "belief in a single god."

5. Hebrews Vocabulary 1. Hebrews – shepherds from Mesopotamia who settled in Canaan (Israel) being led by Abraham under God’s orders. 2. Monotheism – the belief and practice in only one god. 3. Judaism – a monotheistic religion based on the foundations of Abraham; from Judah (great grandson of Abraham). 4. Jews – followers of Judaism. 5. Ten Commandments – God’s code of moral laws. 6. Synagogue – Jewish house of worship; a temple is located inside each one for worship. 7. Torah – the most sacred text of Judaism; God’s laws are written down into the first five books of the Hebrew Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy); a history of the Jews until the death of Moses. 8. Rabbi – religious leader in Judaism; responsible for interpreting the Torah and teaching. 9. High Holy Days – the two most sacred of all Jewish Holy Days; celebrated in September or October; the first two days, Rosh Hashanah celebrate the beginning of the New Year in the Jewish calendar; Yon Kippur (the Day of Atonement) where Jews ask God to forgive their sins (the holiest day of the year). 10. Shabbat – the Hebrew word for Sabbath; begins at sundown on Friday evening and ends at nightfall on Saturday.
