2  Real name was Samuel Clemens  His pen name (“Mark Twain”) was a signal yelled out by riverboat pilots- connected him to his youth on the Mississippi River  Wrote about American themes using the American English people actually spoke and dirt- poor heroes  Deaths of his wife and daughters left him bitter and cynical  His writing began to depict a pessimistic view of society and human nature (p. 562) MARK TWAIN

3  A man from the East comes to a western mining town.  At the request of a friend, the narrator speaks with Simon Wheeler in order to ask after a man named Leonidas W. Smiley.  Instead of giving the narrator the information that he asks for, Wheeler launches into a tall tale about a man named Jim Smiley. “THE NOTORIOUS JUMPING FROG OF CALAVERAS COUNTY”
