Prior to Europeans Based primarily on sharing or pooling resources Northwest Coast redistributed wealth using a central administration. Bought and sold slaves as well. There was no money or anything similar to it in any Native society in Canada.

After Europeans 300 years the fur trade was the driving economic force particularly in the west As fur trade died Aboriginals turned to: Commercial fishing on east and west coasts Farming and ranching in the prairies Selling arts and crafts across Canada

Schools Mid 1700s saw the beginning of formalized church run schools for Natives in Canada Mid 1800s Industrial boarding schools began These schools were for both Natives and non- English Europeans

Residential Schools Indian Residential Schools began in 1880s Philosophy was to remove children from the “corrupting” influence of their parents Schools run by churches but paid for by the Canadian government Schools would run until 1947 and the last was not closed until the 1980s

Spirituality Western / European view is to divide human knowledge into categories and sub categories Native view is to see knowledge as an integrated whole Their society is seen as a circle where everything has its place and new things just expand this circle

Medicine Wheel This circular concept is represented by many Native cultures with the Medicine Wheel The Wheel is divided into 4 categories which can have many different meanings however some of the more common are: 4 directions, 4 stages of life, 4 peoples of the world. At the centre of the circle is the Creator
