Water on Earth Text Book page # 314 - 317

Who am I? I am a compound found naturally in Earth I control the Earth’s climate I am necessary for all life I am the universal solvent I am continuously recycled I defy gravity I am not a metal I have no nutrients Who am I?

Why? Approximately three-fourths of the earth is water. Earth – A Water planet

Where is Earth’s water?

What kinds are there? 97% of the water is salt water, and is found in the oceans of the world. 3% is fresh water. 2% is frozen which leaves less than 1% for drinking water.

Vocabulary Condensation – The process by which molecules of water vapor in the air become liquid water. Precipitation – Any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches Earth’s surface. Erosion – The process by which water, ice, wind, or gravity moves weathered rocks or soil. Melting – The process by which Melting – The process by which snow or ice (the solid form of water) changes into liquid form. Transpiration - T Transpiration - The process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere. Evaporation - T Evaporation - The process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas or vapor.

What is the water cycle? Also called Hydrologic Cycle. In this process, water moves continuously through a cycle, from Earth’s surface to the atmosphere and back. Earth’s water is naturally recycled through the water cycle. The sun’s energy drives this process.

Think Pair Share Does all water lead to the ocean?

Distribution of Earth’s Fresh Water

“All water leads to the ocean.” Gill - Finding Nemo Our Society needs a better understanding of how we get clean water for all human needs.

Groundwater Makes up 23% of Earth’s freshwater. 12% Shallow (we can reach) 11% Deep (out of our reach)
