2 Interesting Facts  Scientific name- Acer rubrum  Tree sap from a 40 y/o or older is used to make everyday maple syrup  Wood is commonly used for musical instruments and clothes pins  A very common tree in Virginia  Has a 4 season landscape color.  A pioneer tree, a tree that is 1 st to take over a field  Often an understory tree.  Red Maples are favorited by blackbirds to nest.

3 The Bark  The bark is very slick and soft  There are splits all over the tree  The bark is light grey with white spots

4 The Leaves  Simple leaf  Toothed margin  Opposite branching  Turn either orange or red in the fall.
