1 Cell Theory Notes

2 How do we know if something is alive?
To be considered a living thing an object must: Be composed of cells Respond to its environment Have the ability to reproduce Have the ability to move Grow and develop Perform metabolic processes (Ex: converting food into energy)

3 What is a cell? The smallest unit of all living things
Some organisms are made of only one cell and are therefore called UNICELLULAR organisms Some organisms are made up of many cells and are therefore called MULTICELLULAR organisms

4 Robert Hooke: 1635-1703 Is the first person to use the term ‘cell’
Used a simple microscope to look at a piece of cork and noticed that it consisted of a bunch of small compartments Since he had seen Monks living in little rooms when he visited a monastery he decided to call them cells

5 Anton von Leeuwenhoek: 1632-1723
Referred to as the father of modern microscopy In 1673 he used a microscope to look at pond water and noticed that it was full of moving things He decided to call these moving things ‘animalcules’ which means little animals (today we know these organisms as protists) In 1676 he discovered bacteria

6 Matthias Schleiden: 1804-1881 He was a German botanist
He discovered that all plants are made of cells Is one of the scientists that contributed to the creation of cell theory

7 Theodor Schwann: 1810-1882 He was a German zoologist
He discovered that all animals were made of cells Is also one of the scientists that contributed to the creation of cell theory

8 Rudolph Virchow: He was a German pathologist (studies the origin and nature of diseases) He decided that all living cells were created from other living cells He was the final contributor to the creation of cell theory Bone tissue under a microscope

9 Components of Cell Theory:
All living things are composed of one or more cells Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in all living things The term STRUCTURE refers to how something is built or created The term FUNCTION refers to the job that the structure performs All cells are produced from other cells
