3  A speaker’s exact words must be surrounded by quotation marks. “I love flowers,” said Jesse. Punctuation marks (commas, periods, question marks, exclamation marks) are always placed inside the closing quotation marks. The first word in the quotation is always capitalized. “Do you like potato chips?” asked Molly. Use a comma to introduce a quotation after a dialogue tag. Jesse replied, “I love flowers and potato chips!”
