Quotes 101

Adding Transitions (No quote shall stand alone). OLD: Mandela wants his people to compromise. “Every day he was becoming convinced of the need for unity between whites and non-whites” (Taylor 91). NEW: Taylor shows that Mandela, while working in the ANC, wanted his people to compromise by writing, “Every day he was becoming convinced of the need for unity between whites and non- whites” (91).

Quotes within Quotes Precious has been a purveyor of justice at an early age. Admitting truth through her art contest she admits to the judge, “ ‘It is not a picture of cattle…It is a picture of goats. You cannot give me a prize for a mistake’ ” (43). Clearly her values have been encouraged from an early age, values she was justly rewarded.

Partial Quotes Don’t use the whole quote unless you need to. Whole: OLD: “He was a man who, impregnated with the magic of the white man, would infuse the tribe with wisdom and strength, giving it new life” (Gordimer 91). Partial: NEW: Gordimer describes Waiyaki as “impregnated with the magic of the white man” (91) to show that he has joined with the values and knowledge of this new culture.

Bridging Quotes Gordimer describes Waiyaki as “impregnated with the magic of the white man,” and said that Waiyaki’s people thought he would “infuse the tribe with wisdom and strength” (91). This reveals how much the Kiyuku people trust Waiyaki, even though he has become somewhat of an outsider.

Quotes Over 3 Lines: Set up the quote’s context (use a colon) No quotation marks Indent the entire quote Cite at the end Double space throughout Follow up analysis is not indented but continuous of the paragraph. …In Fuller’s autobiography, the women often exhibit strength despite mirroring what it takes to live in a harsh environment. A young Alexander remembers: We are not suppose to leave the valley without an armed escort because there are land mines in the road on the way…and terrorist ambushes and Dad is on patrol, so we are women-without-men, which is supposed to be a weakened state of affairs. But this is an emergency. We put the dogs in the car and drive (70-71). Clearly, Fuller experiences moments where, while danger is near, gender inequality is nowhere in sight.

Adding Brackets: {Clarifies Meaning} OLD: “He looked forward to the day …” (Taylor 119). NEW: “[Mandela] looked forward to the day…” (Taylor 119).

Paraphrase When what you want from the source is the idea expressed, and not the specific language used to express it, paraphrase. If you can express in fewer words what the key point is, paraphrase.

Choose strong evidence Ensure your quotes support your topic sentence and your thesis. Remember- no quote should stand alone. Experiment with quote set up: – Partial – Bridge – Transitions
