Promoting Moral Reform Morality reform the key to improving the lives of poor people. Prohibition Woman’s Christian Temperance Union-would enter saloons, singing, praying, and urging saloonkeepers to stop selling alcohol Frances Willard-transformed the WCTU in a national organization members worked from suffrage, started kindergartens, visited inmates in prisons and asylums Anti-Saloon league angered immigrant groups that included alcohol in their customs/traditions attacked saloons single-issue interest group

Creating Economic Reform As a result of the Panic of 1893, many questioned the capitalist system and laissez- faire Some workers embraced socialism led by Eugene V. Debs Big Business received favorable treatment from government officials and politicians Journalists that exposed the corrupt side of business and public life were known as muckrakers

Fostering Efficiency Scientific management-Frederick Winslow Taylor apply scientific principles to make tasks simpler and easier What would be the outcome of these principles on production? Problem is some work harder/faster than others Henry Ford used an assembly line for steady speed Workers quit in exhaustion or injured in accidents Ford introduced the $5/day and 8 hour/day workers exhausted themselves
