The Canadian Country Music Association was founded in 1976 at which time they were called Academy of Country Music Entertainment. This group was founded to promote Canadian country music within Canada and to the rest of the world. In 1987 they changed their name to the CCMA. In 1982 they held their first award ceremony which was called and still is called today - the Canadian Country Music Awards.

The first award ceremony in 1982 was held in Halifax, and since then has only returned to the Maritimes once which was in 2006 in Saint John. Each year the show takes to the road and the ceremony is held in a different city cross Canada. Being able to host the CCMA is a huge economic boom for the hosting city because of the amount of people who attend the show and it draws people from all over the world. This year it will be held in Edmonton, Alberta on September 7, 2014.
