Education is an important part of patient treatment. We can give a patient instructions on how to take medication and a general description of the treatments and disease but if they do not understand the disease and the rationale behind the treatments then the patient will be less likely to have optimal outcomes. In this presentation we will look at the following things: My priority area—individualized education for Atrial Fib patients How this evidenced based knowledge can be integrated into a model The question that I will be asking 2

Patient education A problem with healthcare today. A step toward prevention. Individualized teaching relates to patient compliance. Compliance leads to better quality of life and fewer hospital stays. Better quality of life and fewer hospital stays lead to decrease healthcare costs and increased patient satisfaction. 3

Patient education is critical in improving patient’s health and outcomes. Patients with atrial fibrillation that have a better knowledge of their disease have a good sense of coping. (Koponen, 2008) Knowledge, skills, attitude, and self- awareness empower patients to have a positive influence on their health behavior (Koponen, Recola, Ruotsalainen, Lehto, Leino-Kilpi, & Voipio-Pulkki, 2008) 5
6
When a patient is educated about their disease, its process, and treatment, they are better prepared to maintain optimal quality of life 6
7
The development of teaching guidelines for practitioners and nurses to follow for atrial fibrillation patients. May include an educational pamphlet for the patient to refer to at home. Education should be ongoing during the interaction of the practitioner and the patient. 7
8
Putting policy in place for the education of all patient with atrial fibrillation prior to discharge home from the hospital. A individualized checklist of all information to be cover with the patients according to there treatment plan. 8

Can be done just after education. A survey after discharge. Patient compliance Patient outcomes 9

In patients with atrial fibrillation, how does individualized patient education rather than generalized education affect the patient ability to adhere to treatment. 10
