2. The Basics Rape occurs across the globe. India has a large population, so the cases are more frequent. When this topic is discussed, many come to the defense of the average man.  “Not all men are rapists”, “Some men are victims too.”

3. What is it? The most traditional form of assault is penetration. But this is not the only kind.  India has very recently expanded the definition. The term differs under whatever law enforcement you report to.  Vague or not clearly defined discourages victims from reporting.

4. Why does it happen? Those that attack do not respect women.  They want to punish them.  They think females have a certain place and shouldn’t stray from it.  India already puts men very highly above women.

5. What about male victims? Men can be subject to assault as well, but they face the same pressures as women. They must be strong and always have a desire for sex.  This makes it difficult for them to admit to being raped.

6. Social Pressures The older generation continues to pass ideas to the newer and they are not all good. Males and females are brought up under similar notions.  Men are the leaders and women must submit to them.  Children are taught this by both mother and father.

7. Pressures, cont Being raised this way with words from one’s mother doesn’t make it less prejudiced and harmful.

8. The fact that many incidents occur between married couples produces a gray area.  Women are led to believe sex is a duty to their husband.  Even if they are unwilling, most will submit.  Those that don’t are unlikely to tell anyone.

9. India’s Response In the cities, some law enforcement have hired more female officers to encourage women to come forth. In more rural areas, there is the Gulabi Gang  Educates and empowers victims.  Their action provides hope to the people.
