1 PASI 2013 – Forming Teams  Principles of Team-Based Learning http://www.teambasedlearning.org http://www.teambasedlearning.org http://www.teambasedlearning.org  Each team mixes capabilities, assigned.  Teams stay together whole workshop: my lectures; and all fieldwork, processing, presentations.  No peer evaluation here; if problems talk to organizers.

2 PASI 2013 – Forming Teams  Improves retention, average performance, diversity.  May prevent deep thinking, high performance by individuals, discourage innovation.  Used extensively in medicine, engineering: Fields that assess individuals with licensing exams. 3 PASI 2013 – Forming Teams  Objective: each team has a diverse range of abilities and experience.  First we will identify what categories of capability and experience we have here.  Each group gets up and joins the line from left to right at the back of the room.  Once you are in line, please stay in order.  Will form the teams now, in ability order…

4 Instructors vs. Participants: If you are an instructor or staff of this workshop, you are not eligible to join a team. Staff will not raise their hands nor line up at the back. Participants, please raise your hand.

5 Critical Need: If you have the physical ability to make 100 hits with a 5-kg sledgehammer, without hurting yourself, you are in the Hero category. Heroes, please raise your hand.

20 Count Off Your Team Number:  Starting at the head of the line, you will count off- 1 st person in line shouts “One”, 2 nd shouts “Two”, etc.  Count off from 1 to 6 (or 5?).  Remember your number! That is your team number.

22 Reorganize the Room:  You will sit with and work with your team for the remainder of the workshop.  Each team will have 5 members.  Each team sits at two adjacent tables.  Team 1 at southwest pair of tables, then going back, and coming forward.

27 Setting the Teams:  Each team elects a Team Captain.  Each Team Captain writes a list of team members, with: Name Name Home institution Home institution Email addresses, other contact info that is volunteered Email addresses, other contact info that is volunteered  I will collect a copy of the list from each Team Captain.
