INFORMATION LITERACY is the ability to efficiently find, critically evaluate, and ethically use information from a variety of sources.
3
ETHICAL USE OF INFORMATION includes properly identifying what sources you used when writing a paper, preparing a speech, creating a multimedia project, etc.
4
A source page (called a bibliography or a Works Cited page) must be created to properly identify those sources.
5
MLA FORMAT The information on a source page must be listed in a consistent format (in a certain order with punctuation in specified places). Although there are various formats that can be used, here you will usually be required to use one called MLA.
6
CITATIONS The information for an individual source is called a citation. Think of it as a “research label.” Each “label” consistently lists the same kind of information in the same way so that anyone looking at your source page will understand those “labels.”
9

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT INFORMATION TO ENTER FOR A PRINT BOOK? Always get your source information from the front of the title page first—then check the back of the title page for what’s missing. Do NOT use the cover of the book. If a title has a subtitle, separate it from the main title with a colon. More than one city? Use the first one listed. More than one date? Use the most recent one given. If the title page has no author listed, check for one at the beginning and at the end of the article
