1
Mitochondrion The Powerhouse of the Cell
2
Mitochondrion Tubular shaped organelle that is found in all types of eukaryotic cells. Located in the cytoplasm. Bound by two membranes: Smooth outer membrane Inner folded membrane
3
Parts of Mitochondrion Inner Membrane Outer Membrane Crista/Cristae- Folds of inner membrane Matrix-Includes enzymes, Ribosomes, and DNA
5
Functions To generate large quantities of energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) Store calcium for cell signaling Generate heat Mediate cell growth and death
6
Similar function of a digestive system ~Takes in nutrients ~Breaks down those nutrients ~Creates energy for the cell ~This process is known as cellular respiration
8
Cellular Respiration Allows organisms to use energy stored in the chemical bonds of glucose (C 6 H 12 O 6 ). The energy in glucose is used to produce ATP. Cells use ATP to supply their energy needs. chemical bondsglucose
9
Mitochondrial Dysfunction Parkinson's Disease- Dopamine Epilepsy Alzheimer’s Muscular Dystrophy Lou Gehrig’s Cerebral Palsy Autism Diabetes
10
Mitochondrial Dysfunction Energy production problem Power plants in cell don’t work properly Body has a power outage Dysfunction can look different and is categorized by many diseases
