Power of Vocab Instruction Big Take Aways from Anita Archer
2
Select words to explicitly teach 0 Choose words that are UNKOWN 0 Choose words that are not common but can generalize to other areas 0 Words that have more than one meaning or the meaning in your course is different than the most common meaning 0 Provide instruction on figurative language 0 If the student does not have a lot of background 0 If the word doesn’t have a simpler more common word that you can tie it to 0 Example: executioner tie to execute
3
Explicitly Teach New Words 0 3-10 words per story 0 Kid friendly definition 0 Introduce relatives (Example: Analyze- analyzing, analyzed, analysis, analyzable, analyzer) 0 Illustrate the word with examples and non-examples 0 Check for understanding: 0 Ask deep processing questions: “Why do you think something becomes compulsory?” 0 Have students discern between examples and non-examples 0 “Is going to school in 9 th grade compulsory?”
4
Teach a little about a lot of words 0 Constantly bombard students with academic language 0 Don’t explicitly teach every word 0 Pair it with a synonym or give a brief definition or parallel language. 0 “Let’s analyze this equation. Let’s figure it out.” 0 “What was the significance of this incident…this event?” 0 “We need to differentiate…tell the differences…between external and internal character problems.”

Using Academic Language 0 Teacher always speaks with a high vocabulary 0 Student required to respond both orally and and in writing with complete sentences 0 This will drastically increase vocabulary, language skills, and writing skills (benefiting FRL and ELL) 0 Begin with sentence starters and sentence frames 0 -sentence frame should rephrase the question 0 -teach students to answer questions by rephrasing it

Sentence Frames a Must 0 Students reading and speaking with academic vocabulary on a regular basis will be much more likely to WRITE with it!!! 0 Require them to rephrase the question when answering whether they are speaking or writing. 0 Example sentence frames: 0 I can distinguish between a complete and incomplete metamorphosis by… 0 I can differentiate between common and proper nouns by…. 0 I interpret the character’s actions as _______________ because…..
7
More Sentence Frames 0 Structurally this math problem is incorrect because…. 0 The conclusion of the experiment is abnormal because…. 0 I will finalize my writing sample by….. 0 I can validate the author’s point with the following supporting evidence from the passage….. 0 (Name of character) diminishes (another character)’s feelings because……. 0 I can conclude this statement is a fact because…. 0 I agree/disagree that the statement is an opinion because…

Other Powerful Vocab Activities 0 Yes/No/Why 0 1. Using 2 or more words from the vocabulary list, form a question. 0 2. Students justify their answers with partners, or small groups using the target words in their rationale. 0 Can incidents cause compassion? 0 Do territories that are possessions have autonomy?
10
