Last night’s homework Please re-read pages 717– 722 ( MUST take notes and part of your notes will be the terms in blue bold print) You are to focus on your parents and look at the events that they lived through. For example, if your parents are 45 years old what events occurred over the past 45 years that are noteworthy? Look at any history timeline. Obviously you need to find out over the weekend how old your parents are.

New material Britain also began to urge people to leave thus strengthening the empires by creating a demand for English goods in their colonies. Backed up by the military. The first British industry to benefit was the textile industry. Inventions such as the flying shuttle, water frame, the spinning mule and the power loom pushed the industry. Much of the cotton came from the Southern States & South America from slave labor. The invention of the Cotton GIN (Engine) helped make cotton more productive and cheaper.

Transportation Prior to the Industrial Revolution, boats & ships relied entirely on wind power. The invention of the steam engine which eventually on to a boat. Governments and business started to build canals to move goods and people. Sometimes private companies built roads and charged a fee (toll) to use the road. The British built and improved roads. Around 1820, the British developed and used the steam locomotive engine. The railways began to modernize the lifestyle of England.

Transportation The steam locomotive began a major industry. 1. Cheaper for manufactures to ship their products. 2. Workers were needed to build the railways, man the coal mines and build & maintain the railway cars 3. Farmers benefited from getting the crops to market and now they could search for the best price 4. The trains encouraged travel and living outside the cities and commuting to work.
