What is a Piano? A musical instrument played using a keyboard. Invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori. Widely used in classical and jazz music for: -Solo performances -Ensemble use -Chamber music -Accompaniment

Parts of a Piano Keyboard Housing and Lid Pedals Keys, hammers and string

Keyboard What makes a piano a piano. Comprised of 88 black and white keys.

Housing and Lid The curves of a grand piano. Gives more louder and resonant sound (when lid is open).

Pedals Sometimes two, but generally three. Can make the sound softer or louder. Make certain notes sound longer.

Keys, hammers and strings Produces the sound. Tunes the appropriate musical note.

Petite Grand Smallest of horizontal pianos. Height: 4’5”-4’11”

Baby Grand Very popular because of it’s esthetic appeal. Height: 4’11”-5’6”

Concert Grand Largest of all grand pianos. Height: 7’6”-9’+

Artur Schnabel (1882-1951) Raised in Vienna. Soloist and chamber musician. First pianist to record the complete cycle of Beethoven’s piano sonatas.

Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982) Gifted Poland-child. His recordings bear witness to his: -Exceptional vitality and uncomplicated -Genuine approach to music-making

Myra Hess (1890-1965) Doyenne of British pianists. Spearheaded a series of daily lunchtime concerts in the National Gallery.

Clara Haskil (1895-1960) Born in Bucharest. Visionary musician and pianist. Won the Conservatoire’s premier prix.
