Growing Bible Study Part Two
2
Study Rules We should read thoughtfully so as to try to understand the message. We should notice who is speaking and to whom they are speaking. We should notice the context. We learn more every time we read it again.
3
Memorization Job 22:22 “Receive, please, instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart.” Psalm 119:11 “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” James 1:21”Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.”
4
Memorization Put God’s word in our hearts, keep it in our minds. When we remember God is present, we are not as likely to sin. It is because we have learned from God’s word what is unacceptable to Him, and we put it in our heart to not sin. Psalm 119:52 “ I remembered Your judgments of old, O LORD, and have comforted myself.”
5
Memorization When we remember an action is unacceptable to God, we will not do that action. Psalm 119:92 “Unless Your law had been my delight, I would then have perished in my affliction”. Psalm 43:3 “Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your tabernacle.”
6
Memorization Proverbs 6:20-23 “My son, keep your father’s command, and do not forsake the law of your mother. Bind them continually upon your heart; tie them around your neck. When you roam, they will lead you; when you sleep they will keep you; and when you awake, they will speak to you. For the commandment is a lamp and the law a light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life,”
7
Memorization Deuteronomy 6:6-7 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” Learn them, do them, teach them.
8
Memorization Remember what God has done for you. Deuteronomy 8:3 “So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; by man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.”
9
Memorization: Keeps us from sinning. Gives us comfort. Keeps our efforts in a spiritual focus. Gives us confidence. Gives us guidance. We should memorize and have our children memorize, because it teaches them the importance of God’s word.
10
Meditation Joshua 1:8 “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
11
Meditation Not only do we read and memorize, but we consider what we have read. A good practice is to read a passage of scripture in the morning, and then think about it all day long. With proper meditation, one might realize the necessity to change their lifestyle, or make corrections in one’s behavior.
12
Obediently Exodus 19:5 “Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. Psalm 119:2 “Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with the whole heart.”
13
Obediently Psalm 119:4-6 “You have commanded us to keep your precepts diligently. Oh, that my ways were directed to keep Your statutes! Then I would not be ashamed, when I look into all Your commandments. If we are not intent upon keep God’s laws in our lives, we are wasting our time.
14
Conclusion Bible study is important. Memorization keeps God’s word near. Meditation keeps our minds on God’s word. Looking to the word to serve it obediently is necessary so that we may do things right in the sight of God.
