Part I: Class Routines and Academic Goals

8:00-8:15 Arrival O Students are expected to have three sharpened pencils, two books, one eraser, and a full water bottle at the start of each day. O Silent reading O Turning in and checking homework O Getting ready for the day

8:15-8:30 Morning Meeting O Calendar and Calendar Math O Share circle, group activities O Announcement and messages about the day

8:30-9:10 Science or Social Studies O Science – Reading based and supplemented with experiments and projects. GOAL: Life Cycles, Habitats, Weather, Type of Matter, Force and Motion O Social Studies – American textbook and curriculum, project based learning, 6 Cs. GOAL: Understanding different types of communities and cultures, developing the 6 Cs

9:10-10:00 Specials O PE and Korean: 3 times per week O Art and Music: twice per week O Drama: twice per week during terms 2 and 3

10:25 – 11:15 Reading O GOAL: At 3 rd grade reading proficiency as measured by the DRA and ATOS reading level tests O Reading Notebooks O Group read alouds to build reading skills O Reading Centers O Independent Reading O Guided Reading O Word Work O Writing Center

11:25-12:10 Specials O Two specials per day

12:10-1:05 Lunch and Recess

1:05-2:00 Writing O GOAL: Narrative, Informative, Persuasive, and Expository writing, focus on paragraph writing O Writer’s Workshop O Emphasis on the writing process O Prewrite O Rough Draft O Editing and Revising O Final Draft

2:00-2:55 Math O GOAL: US Common Core Math Curriculum, Everyday Math textbook series O Short group lesson focused on new skills and strategies O Math journals O Math Centers O Computer center (Arcademics.com) O Various Math games

2:55-3:05 Pack Up O Writing in homework logs O Eating afternoon snack O Packing up and going to lab

3:05-4:00 Labs

Notes: Spelling/Handwriting O Spelling lists are given once a week on Monday, tests are on Friday. O Spelling lists are typically vocabulary words or 2 nd grade sight words. O Handwriting is taught during reading block and throughout the day.

Notes: Homework O Students are given a small amount of reading and math homework O Homework should be done individually, nothing I give as homework is a new concept O Goal of homework: increase student’s sense of responsibility, prepare them for grades 3 and 4

Notes: Tickets and Rewards Coupons O Students earn tickets for good behavior and academic performance. O Tickets can be taken away (see poster) O Students use tickets to buy reward coupons.

Part II: Important Changes for Term 2 1) Swimming during PE class O Students will have swimming on Tuesday mornings from 8:15 to 10:00. O They should come to school on Tuesday wearing their swimsuits underneath their clothes. O If students needs to miss swimming you must tell the office in advanced.

2) Drama Class O Students will have drama class starting at the end of October. O Drama will be on Mondays and Wednesdays.

3) The Homework Log is now a book O Please check the homework log and sign it daily O You can also send me notes in the homework log

4) Portfolios O The CDS First Program is changing to digital portfolios O Those will be available next week on Tuesday O Information on how to use the portfolio will be posted on my website
