1. Event: The Constitutional Convention Miss Springborn Constitution and Government

2. When and Where… Time: May-August of 1787 Place: Philadelphia, PA. Independence Hall Duration (how long): 4 months

3. Important People James Madison- father of the constitution George Washington- to be the first president Ben Franklin- offers sound advice George Mason- proponent of the Bill of Rights

4. Cause- Why this happened in the first place… The Articles of Confederations were failing and the states called for a convention to fix them.

5. Effect: What happens because of the convention… The delegates threw out the Articles and decided to start all over. The new government that they wrote was called the Constitution.

6. Order if Events… The following items need to be written among the bottom of the notes sheet. Follow the arrows that say “Order of Events/Facts” from left to right….

7. Event #1 55 delegates from 12 of the 13 states travel to Philadelphia, PA

8. Event #2- The Great Compromise How to count representatives in Congress Virginia Plan- created a 3 branch government with a 2 house legislature based on state size (BIG STATE PLAN) New Jersey Plan- Makes the upper house of congress based on equal representation (Senate) (little state plan) The delegates combine the two plans creating an upper and lower house of Congress

9. Event #3- Three fifths Compromise Do we or do we not count slaves in the total population?? The North said NO WAY and the South said YES!! Not fair to north that didn’t have any slaves Would make all the Southern states have very large populations. WHAT TO DO???? Are Slaves People or Property???

10. Solution… For every 5 slaves only 3 would count towards the total population…hence the name three/fifths compromise Also, the slave trade would end in 20 years the year 1808. There would be no more slave trade in Washington DC
