Technologies Available to Educators via Broadband Analog video Digital video Video-on-demand Streaming video Web based instruction PROGRESSION
2
Analog Video Waste of space! 6 digital channels in one 6 MHz channel, better than NTSC quality. Free up channels for leasing. SOME ADVANTAGES: Good Quality. Simple (but not cheap) to implement and use. Easy to revert back if broadband operator goes out of business. May be best choice if you have no broadband partner.
3
Digital Video 6 channels of video in one analog channel. Requires expensive coders for each channel. Somewhat difficult to implement. Equipment is scarce because wireless cable was never viable. 4Mb/s per digital channel. Some companies claim more.
4
Video-on-demand Student-friendly. Digital TV required? Streaming required? Simple production / faculty- friendly. Delivery anytime, anyplace (but requires a broadband connection) Probably, to get enough channels. Desirable, but bandwidth demands are huge.
5
High Quality Streaming Video Integrates more efficiently with Sprint / WorldCom systems. Quality issues Extension of IP required for live delivery. Video to the student desktop. Requires servers/storage. Requires high speed ITFS connection. At least 2 Mbps required for NTSC quality. Video packets need priority to avoid long time delays (latency) or jitter, low frame rates. At last! About 1 GB of hard disk per hour of video. (Applies to all digital solutions) Because it is IP based.
6
Web Based Instruction Rich learning environment. Growth industry. Integrates streaming video, audio, web content. Requires high speed ITFS connection. Expensive development. Faculty buy-in.
