6 UL UK – Process Mapping – 22 July 2004 6 July 2004  The High Performance Organisation Group Ltd For successful Process Mapping Define & agree a purpose for the process Get the right balance between brevity and detail (2 min rule) Aim for an overall ‘picture’ that all can understand Allocate Job Titles to own the activities & the overall process Make sure important support activities are included Gain involvement & ownership Use appropriate software to design & communicate Use sub-processes if needed – 3 levels – plus “additional info.”

9 UL UK – Process Mapping – 22 July 2004 9 July 2004  The High Performance Organisation Group Ltd Points to remember Don’t use functional / departmental names for titles of processes or activities - use ACTIVE words Use UL’s words not management jargon It has to be understood by everyone within UL, including your customers Reflect the PDCA cycle, if possible Consider all areas of the business involved in the process Usually a maximum of 12-15 activities in each process chart Apply the 20:20 rule Time & process flow go right to left
