Definitions for functions The part 2 warm-up example had two variables. One variable “p” had no choice but to change its value depending on the value of the other variable “n”. Because “p” had to change its value in relation to “n”, we say “p” is dependent on “n”. Put another way, “p” is the dependent variable. That makes “n” the independent variable. Independent Variable provides the input values to a function. These values are called the Domain of the function. Dependent Variable provides the output values of a function. These values are called the Range of the function.

A Function is the rule, or set of operations, used to get from the independent variable’s value to the dependent variable’s value – it’s what you DO to the input to get the output
