1 Civilian Education System (CES) –
Registering for Civilian Education System (CES) – Foundation/Basic/Intermediate/Advanced and Supervisor Development Course (SDC) and other courses in CHRTAS

2 Login to Civilian Human Resources Training Application System (CHRTAS) at
Click on “I Agree”

3 It will take you to this screen where you select the drop down arrow (blue arrow) and then select Army Civilian (green arrow)

4 Click on Go to sign in using your CAC – select your CAC when prompted

5 It will bring you to this page where anything annotated in RED will need to be updated. As a general rule it requires you to update these categories every time you login (blue arrow). You will need to click submit on each page where you update information or it will not save.

6 Once you have updated your records, hover over “Student” (red arrow) with your mouse and then select “Apply for Training” (yellow arrow).

7 Make sure to select the appropriate training on the left
Make sure to select the appropriate training on the left. If you are applying for Civilian Education System (CES) training, select it (red arrow). If you are applying for Supervisor Development Course (SDC) select it (blue arrow). Then proceed to fill out 1, 2, 3, and 4 at the top of the page (red box).

8 For CES – under # 1 (blue arrow) select the correct course (red arrow) based on your eligibility which can be check by clicking on CED Eligibility and Completion Status (yellow arrow), Basic, Intermediate and Advance Courses have both a Distributed Learning (Phase 1) {online – green box} and Resident (Phase 2) (purple box) which requires a 2-3 week TDY. The online must be completed before being eligible to apply for the resident phase. Each course has a set timeframe to complete the course in (~ 6 months). If not completed in this timeframe, you will have to reapply.

9 The Distributed Learning, which must be completed prior to Resident Phase will allow you to choose the “Web Class” (blue arrow) When online portion is completed, you will be able to select the resident phase which is held in either Fort Leavenworth, Kansas or Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

10 Under “Class” (red arrow) you would choose Web for online (no other option – blue arrow) or you would chose the Resident Phase location.

11 The final step is submitting the application which you will find under Pending Training Request. Ensure your supervisor’s name is correct and that the address is updated, then click submit.

12 You will get an similar to the one below giving you instructions for logging into (Army Learning Management System (ALMS) to complete the training for which you registered.

13 Once you have received notification that you have been approved for training, log into Army Knowledge Online ( Click on “Self Service” (red arrow) and then select “My Education” (blue arrow).

14 This page will open. Select “Access the ALMS” (red arrow) or click on the ALMS logo (blue arrow)

15 You will open up the course (blue arrow) and launch each module from your In-Progress Learning Activities (red arrow). If you have any issues contact the Help Desk by selecting the link (green arrow) and filling out the help desk ticket.
