H UMAN R ISKS Risks caused by human mistakes or dishonesty, or other risks that can be controlled by humans Range from the financial impact of robbery to job related injury or illness

C USTOMER D ISHONESTY Loss caused by customer theft, fraudulent payment, or nonpayment is a human risk Shoplifting causes 15 to 37 billion dollars per year, which is passed on to us in form of higher prices Nonpayment of accounts with fraudulent check or credit cards

E MPLOYEE R ISKS Employees symbolize another human risk for business Enron was the largest bankruptcy in the U.S in 2001 resulting in thousands of employees losing their jobs

S KILLS AND W ORKING E NVIRONMENT Many companies have instituted safety programs that stress the importance of proper food handling Customer or employee accidents are potential human risks The threat of sexual harassment or physical violence in the workplace

C OMPUTER - R ELATED C RIME Malicious programs called computer worms or viruses can be downloaded inadvertently by employees and can wreak havoc on internal computer networks and communications systems. Protect a business from computer crime by securing the computer network with passwords, firewall programs, and virus detectors.
