3. Biography Edward Estlin Cummings was born on October 14, 1894. In Cambridge, Massachusetts. He received his BA from Harvard University. Cummings was married three times. To Elaine Orr, Anne Mannerly Barton, Marion Morehouse Had one daughter named Nancy Cummings left the United States for France as a volunteer ambulance driver in World War I. Cummings was imprisoned for several months by French authorities for suspicion of treason due to letters he'd written. He began writing poems as early as 1904. He died on September 3, 1962 in New Hampshire from brain hemorrhage He is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston, Massachusetts. He also traveled throughout Europe, meeting poets and artists, including Pablo Picasso At the time of his death, September 3, 1962, he was the second most widely read poet in the United States, after Robert Frost.. The poem is broken up into nine quatrains which is nine stanzas with four lines each. In this poem there is many examples of enjambments in fact, there is only two punctuation marks in this whole poem. The rhyme scheme for this poem goes; a, a, b, c, d, d, e, e, f, f, g, h, I, I, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, a, s, t, u, v, w, w, x, s, y, y, e, e. This is a Light Verse poem which is a general category of poetry written to entertain. Light Verse may also have a serious side to it.

5. Understanding of the poem This poem is about common everyday life for those not destined for fame going through all the “normal "human emotions. Cumming’s is telling us how universality of life’s events. While not naming any town or person even in the title but he indicates that he represents all people also, explaining the uniqueness of our lifetime and species. He’s also trying to explain through this poem that while everything stays the same for thousands and millions of years we’re the only ones who ever change and leave so, because of that tells us to push our boundaries so we can achieve our dreams. So, this poem is about life and the steps of life like childhood, adulthood, marriage, and even death. Cumming's is also saying “how pretty a town” can conceal something maybe not that pretty. By saying that he’s trying to say how we all have different lives and some maybe be more “pretty” then others.

6. Diction and Tone Cumming’s diction gives the poem a silly approach of life that is abnormal but truly is reality. The diction and tone help us understand the stages of life he is taking through during the poem. So that makes it positive. There are some words in here that may not be so positive which is in line 25 when he says “anyone died I guess” making it seem like he doesn’t care.

7. Imagery Cumming’s uses imagery in the poem with the 4 seasons. Throughout some of the poem he uses four words which are sun, moon, stars, and rain. These 4 words represent each season for example: Sun- Summer Moon- Autumn Stars- Winter Rain- Spring And these 4 season represent the chart of life from birth to death. That is why the sequence of the words change throughout the poem. Because in the poem he’s trying to tell us while we change and leave everything stays the same. The sun makes place for the moon and the stars, the rain comes and the seasons change. Again, time passes. Notice how in stanza one the sequence is sun moon stars rain and in the last stanza it is the same as well because when we die the seasons start all over again for someone else.

8. Choice of punctuation In this poem there is many lines in here where they’re put into parenthesis. Cumming’s never tells us exactly why he does this but, parenthesis are used to emphasize something. His use of parenthesis infers and adds persona to the poem and makes it stand out. Also throughout this poem there is about twenty-eight enjambments. In fact there is only two periods in the whole poem. Since this poem is about life and the stages of it what if Cumming’s is using these enjambments to represent that. This poem has many enjambments to express how life continues and we are forced to go along with but, the punctuation marks represent the sudden stops that life does come with.
