Prudencia’s bookish nature allows her to actually enjoy her captivity in Hell, for the most part. For Prudencia, being trapped in a never ending library is a wonderful thing. When Prudencia first sets eyes on it she is amazed by the comprehensive collections; ‘It’s…just…heaven’. This is an interesting juxtaposition between how we perceive Heaven and Hell and it is this that allows Prudencia to become stronger as a character. Her bookish nature allows her to adapt to her new imprisonment well after she is trapped. She even uses her time to prove her colleague Professor Macintosh wrong – an empty gesture but one which she takes great pride in; ‘Take that, Professor Macintosh, shove that in your late-capitalist pipe and smoke it.’ By the end of her imprisonment, she feels empowered enough to stand up to the Devil and take her freedom back into her own hands; ‘Instinct took over and she just – just – fucking ran.’ All of this proves to us that she has made the most of her unfortunate situation, thus making her character trait a significant strength.
