3-1 Early Models of the Atom
2
Atoms? ► The Greek Philosopher Democritus Proposed that all matter is made up of small indivisible particles Called these “atomos” = atoms Today’s Definition- The smallest particles of an element that retains the chemical identity of that element.
3
► Ancient Greeks rejected his ideas ► What holds these particles together? Democritus could not answer, and his ideas were rejected. Remained rejected until the 17 th century when observations could be made.
4
1700’s ► Lavoisier Law of Conservation of matter ► Joseph Louis Proust Law of constant composition A compound always contains the same elements in the same proportions by mass.
5
John Dalton ► Each element is composed of extremely small particles called atoms ► All atoms of an element are identical, but they differ from those of other elements ► Atoms are neither created or destroyed in a chemical reaction ► A compound always has the same relative numbers of atoms.
6
► John Dalton launches us into experimentation about what exactly an atom is.
