Goals ► Identify what Jim Crow is. ► Identify the goals of Jim Crow ► Explain tactics used in the Jim Crow region of the United States.

Jim Crow ► The term “Jim Crow” originates from a character used in an 1830 play.

Jim Crow ► What is Jim crow? It is the name of a racial segregation system that operated mostly in the South.

Jim Crow ► Who uses these laws Both state and local governments enforce Jim Crow laws.

Jim Crow ► These laws were designed to segregate schools, public transportation, and public areas.

Jim Crow ► System was based on the belief that whites were superior to blacks in all important ways, including but not limited to intelligence, morality, and civilized behavior.

Jim Crow ► African-Americans were given the status of second-class citizens. ► Separate but Equal?

Jim Crow ► If African-American’s were unwilling to fit the role, violence was used. ► If rules and laws were not followed, violence was used.

Jim Crow ► Examples of laws: A black male could not offer his hand (to shake hands) with a white male because it implied being socially equal. Obviously, a black male could not offer his hand or any other part of his body to a white woman, because he risked being accused of rape.

Laws ► Blacks were not allowed to show public affection toward one another in public, especially kissing, because it offended whites. ► No colored barber shall serve as a barber (to) white girls or women (Georgia).

Jim Crow ► What if African Americans and whites had a relationship? ► It would produce a mongrel race which would destroy America

Jim Crow ► SO WHAT? ► The system and laws were set up to make segregation seem right.
