T HE S OUNDS OF E NGLISH

S OUNDS What problems might learners of English have with this activity? Why? What aspect of language does the activity target? Learners may fail to discriminate between many of these names, since they may not share the same sound differences in their first language. The language targets the phonological system of English (as opposed to grammar and vocabulary)

S OUNDS VS LETTERS Write the words down that I dictate. Now count the letters and sounds in each word. For example: letter = six letters (L-E-T-T-E-R) and four sounds (l-e-tt-er) Now, do the rest. This is why we need a phonemic alphabet. And this! –ugh (rough, bough, tough, Slough, slough, laugh, cough, ought)

C ONSONANTS These are the consonant sounds in English. Look at the first 8. What is the difference between those on the left and those on the right?

V OWELS The vowel sounds. Let’s look at the whole list together and decode the words. Go back to the list of consonants and write the words at the bottom in phonemic script. Give me a short sentence about the course so far. Let’s write in phonemic script.

T HE ASSIGNMENT Can you write the first couple in phonemic script? Don’t forget / / at start of sentence and end. Don’t forget sentence stress marked with ‘ before stressed syllable.
