The Universe
2
Universe Consists of all space and the matter space contains
3
Astronomy The study of all physical objects beyond Earth. Ancient cultures noticed that things in space move in cycles and used this to create calendars.

Aztec Calendar Stone
5
Year The time required for the Earth to revolve once around the sun.
6
Month Is roughly the amount of time required for the moon to revolve around the Earth.
7
Day The time required for the Earth to rotate once on its axis.
8
How did it all start?
10
Big Bang Theory Edwin Hubble- In the 1920s, he began researching galaxies. He discovered that the galaxies beyond ours (the Milky Way) were moving further away as time passed. Conclusion: The whole universe must be expanding!
11
Big Bang Theory States that the Universe began with a very condense, very hot spot. 12 to 15 billion years ago all the contents of the universe gathered together under extreme pressure, temperature, and density in a very tiny spot. Then this spot began to expand rapidly.

Raisin Bread
13
As the bread heats in the oven, the raisins move further and further away from each other.
14
Robert Wilson and Arno Penzias 1964- Accidentally discovered, using an antenna, that radiation was coming from all directions in space.
15
The Explanation Cosmic background radiation- The thermal energy from the original expansion distributed this energy in every direction.
