1 EXECUTIVE BRANCH Those who carry out (Execute & Enforce) all laws

2 Who makes up the executive branch? President Vice-President Cabinet (head of each department) Departments – Treasury, War, Foreign Affairs, State, Defense, etc.

3 Term of President 4 yrs. Can serve 2 consecutive terms (8 yrs.) Elected by the Electoral College

4 Electoral College - “Electors” chosen by the candidates – Number of electors is based on each states representation in Congress. Ex. Ohio has 18 representatives and 2 senators, therefore they have 20 electors in the college The bigger states have more representation Outcome of the popular vote can differ from outcome of electoral vote Presidential candidate with most number of electoral votes wins the election

5 Requirements of President Natural-born citizen of the U.S. At least 35 years old Resident of the U.S. for 14 years

6 Important Dates Election Day- First Tuesday (following the first Monday) in November Inauguration Day- January 20 th – Take the “oath of office”

7 Powers of the President Commander-in-chief – Head of military Chief Executive – Makes sure everyone in the executive branch are properly carrying out their duties Chief of State – In charge of foreign relations (can make treaties, but Senate has to vote on them)

8 Powers of the President Chief Legislator – Approve and disapprove laws made by the legislative branch Chief of Party – Head of political party

9 Impeachment Removing an official from office Must be accused, then found guilty of any of the following: – Treason, bribery, other high crimes, or misdemeanors – Accusal occurs in the House of representatives – Trial takes place in the Senate (2/3 vote is necessary for removal)

10 Has any President been impeached? No- the impeachment process has began, but the Presidents were never convicted. – Andrew Johnson – Richard Nixon – Bill Clinton
