f Beam Instrumentation Department Instrumentation -- present and future (Jean’s title) Bob Webber Accelerator Run II Meeting Thursday, January 8, 2004

f Beam Instrumentation Department 1 Instrumentation Priorities – My Perspective NUMI tasks (struggling to identify the target and really get going) TEV BPMs project (needs increased AD attention) Rapid Transfer Line BPMs (no one presently assigned) Recycler BPM finish-up (just to wrap it up) Pbar Flying Wires (just to get it done) SY-120 (except BPM front-end) Flying Wire and Synch light front-end upgrades (for SDA robustness) Flying Wire performance analysis (on going) BLT standardization and robustification Toroid signal integration and readout upgrades TeV IPM Accumulator BPM MOOC/ACNET upgrade (MI BPMs hardly even make my list) Tevatron BLM system at some priority (since I first made this list)

10 Current Activities BPM, BLM maint. Spare BPMs MI DCCT, mentoring MI DCCT, toroid electronics A1, P1 BPMs BLTs, OTR r&d FBIs, DCCTs Synch light, BLTs SBDs RR, NUMI, and TeV BPMs, QXR, Temp/Humidity SY120 support, NUMI TLMs, NUMI profile monitors RR BPM, Back Door, Accum BPM Pbar Flying Wires, TeV IPM Synch light, BLMs, Flying Wires, SBDs

f Beam Instrumentation Department 11 Priorities vs. Assignments Priorities and current assignment of manpower are not necessarily self-consistent –due to the skill mix and operational maintenance responsibilites of individuals within the Department. Some projects are not being worked on at the level of effort that task prioritization would indicate appropriate. –That's why you might judge some things in above list as not properly prioritized; they just end up being high priority for persons less well qualified for other things. – Sad but true.

f Beam Instrumentation Department 12 Collaborations/Outside Contributors PPD – Flying wires, multiwires, electronics assembly, synch light, Flying Wire PMT and OTR mechanics CD – Tev BPM project, Recycler BPMs University of Texas – NUMI profile monitors POST-PRESENTATION ADDITIONS: –I failed to acknowledge that the Instrumentation Department also receives critical support and cooperation from the AD Controls, Mechanical Support, and RF Departments –I did mention at the meeting, although not included in these slides, that much instrumentation work is also done to varying degrees by each of the machine systems departments.

f Beam Instrumentation Department 13 What Worries Me NUMI tasks (struggling to identify the target and really get going) TEV BPMs project (needs increased AD attention) Rapid Transfer Line BPMs (no one presently assigned) Pbar Flying Wires (just to get it done) SY-120 (continued maintenance of disparate systems) BLT standardization and robustification Accumulator BPM MOOC/ACNET upgrade Tevatron BLM system at some priority (since I first made this list) (MI BPMs hardly even make my list)
