Aim: How are Passive & Active Transport Different? DO NOW: 1.Explain the meaning of the picture. 2.Which path will you choose to take? Why?
2
Meaning of Term ‘Concentration’ How much you have of something
3
Passive Transport Transport of molecules across the cell membrane from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration Easy for the cell to do (no ATP energy needed) Similar to riding your bike downhill Diffusion is a type of passive transport Osmosis is a type of passive transport Facilitated Diffusion is a type of passive transport
6
Diffusion of Sugar
7
Osmosis of Water
8
Diffusion of O 2 & CO 2
9
Facilitated Diffusion Transport protein in cell membrane “helps out” or facilitates (makes transport easier)
10
Active Transport Transport of molecules across the cell membrane from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration Hard for the cell to do (ATP energy needed) Similar to riding your bike uphill
12
Passive vs. Active Transport
